Common triggers of your allergic reactions

As you may know some people can experience a severe allergic reaction when exposed to certain substances. Anaphylactic reactions can be set off by a variety of allergens including:

  • Foods
  • Insect stings
  • Medications

Common food products known to bring on reactions include nuts (e.g. peanuts, tree nuts) and seafood (e.g. fish, shellfish).

Some individuals can also experience severe allergic reactions to natural compounds, such as latex, or even exercise. When a reaction is triggered, the symptoms of anaphylactic shock can develop fairly quickly. Fortunately, severe allergic reactions can largely be avoided and even treated in the event of a life-threatening situation.

Did you know...

  • Food allergies affect 2-4% of children and 5-10% of the total population.
  • Foods account for many of the reported anaphylactic cases in children, while medication related instances (e.g. penicillin) are more likely to occur in adults.
